Calgary man arrested in alleged online luring, sexual assault of 14-year-old girl

A Calgary man is facing charges after allegedly luring and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl earlier this year.

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) began investigating in January 2024 after reports that a man was using social media to lure a girl.

Investigators allege the suspect used an online app to coerce the victim to send sexually explicit photos. Police believe the online conversation lasted several months and led to the two meeting in person, where the 14-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted.

Police say the victim’s mother learned what happened after looking at her daughter’s phone.

“This is just one example of why it’s important that parents know what their kids are doing online, who they’re talking to, and what apps they’re using,” said ALERT ICE Const. Heather Bangle. “You have every right as a parent to be checking in on your kids and making sure they’re safe.”

The suspect was arrested at his home with help from Calgary police and RCMP. Investigators have since learned the suspect was communicating with a second victim.

Steven Meier-Araya, 22, is facing several charges including multiple counts of luring a child, one count of sexual assault and multiple child pornography charges.

The accused was released from custody on court-imposed conditions and due back in court later this month.
