Calgary police issue warning following ‘random’ SW sexual assault by naked man

Calgary police are issuing a warning to the public after an unknown man reportedly approached a group of three young women and sexually assaulted one of them last weekend.

Investigators say just around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, the group of women left a house in the 900 block of Ridge Road SW.

Just before 1 a.m., the three women were walking back to the house through Elbow Park, west of 32 Avenue and 8 Street, along a pathway to Pitt Avenue and Ridge Road SW when a naked man grabbed one of them in a sexual natures and pinned another to the ground.

Investigators say two of the women were able to get away and run back to the house where they called police.

A short time later, police arrived and found the third woman walking back to the house.

After speaking with her, police continued with door knocks in the area. HAWCS and the Canine Unit also did patrols in hopes of finding the man but weren’t successful.

The man is described as Caucasian with dark hair and facial hair.

Police initially described a truck parked on the street before the women left the house, but now say investigators have confirmed the truck and its occupant were not involved in the assault.

“Serious incidents, especially when they appear to be random, are extremely concerning for victims and for the whole community,” CPS Staff Sgt. Brad Moore said. “We have increased patrols in the area where the reported attack occurred, and officers are continuing to investigate. We are asking citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.”

Investigators say a warning is being issued because it is in the public interest. However, police advise the intent of the warning is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautions and not to take on any type of vigilante action.
