By CityNews Staff

A truck driver is dead following a crash in southern Alberta that had a stretch of Highway 2 closed for several hours Wednesday.

RCMP say officers were called to the scene on Highway 2 between Township Road 170 and 164, just north of Nanton, around 4:30 a.m.

Police say the transport truck rolled to its side in the ditch and the ammonium nitrate it was carrying spilled onto the grass.

The 31-year-old truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Northbound Highway 2 was closed in the area for some time, but opened around 10:30 a.m. The southbound lanes reopened after 6 p.m.
