‘I thought I was fired when they called’: Calgary coworkers win $5M lotto prize

A group of Calgarians recently got the “surprise of a lifetime” when they learned they won the lottery.

Seven coworkers will equally split a $5 million prize from the June 29 Lotto 6-49 draw after playing the lottery together for six years, according to a Wednesday news release.

“We had two people check on their apps and two others compare the numbers with the winning selection online,” says Edmond Beti said. “We just couldn’t believe it.”

“I thought I was fired when they called me,” says one of the winners, Faye Brautigam. “They told me to take it off speaker phone and it took a while to sink in”

The coworkers say they all have different ideas on how they plan on spending their prize winnings, but no one plans on quitting their job. Beti says most are opting to invest or put it towards mortgages.

“I’m taking my kids to Disneyland,” says winner Christopher Ford. “They always ask to go, and I always say, ‘only if we win the lottery,’ so now I have to.”

The group bought their winning ticket from a 7-Eleven store along Crowchild Trail in NW Calgary.
