Calgary has been hit with a heat warning this Labour Day Monday with temperatures expected to exceed 30 C.
Monday’s high is expected to climb to 32 Cm though with a 60 per cent chance of rain. and a risk of a thunderstorm in the evening.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says overnight temperatures have remained warmer in urban areas and aren’t providing much relief from the heat.
Meteorologists say Tuesday temperatures are expected to be cooler, hitting a high of 26 C.
The ECCC has provided a list of precautions to keep Calgarians cool this Labour Day.
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
- Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
- Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
- Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.
Symptoms such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness are likely heat stroke or heat exhaustion, and the ECCC is asking residents to monitor them.
“Pay particular attention to individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated,” the warning reads.
