Northbound Deerfoot reopens after serious crash involving motorcycle

A stretch of Deerfoot Trail was closed for several hours in southeast Calgary on Friday afternoon after a serious crash involving a motorcycle.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Deerfoot just south of 17 Avenue SE around 3:30 p.m. for reports of a multi-vehicle collision.

Calgary police say a motorcycle driven by a man in his 20s, was travelling northbound when it collided with the rear of an SUV.

Paramedics say the motorcyclist was rushed to hospital in stable but non-life threatening condition. The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Images from the scene show a damaged motorcycle laying on its side and debris on the roadway.

Investigators are investigating speed as a possible cause of the crash, but do not think impairment was a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

Northbound Deerfoot was closed from Peigan Trail SE to 17 Avenue SE for more than three hours. The roadway reopened before 7:30 p.m.
