Calgary firefighters attack Parkdale blaze

Flames shot from the roof of a condo complex in the Parkdale area Saturday morning as fire crews attacked the blaze.

The Calgary Fire Department rushed to Parkdale Boulevard NW at around 8:30 a.m. at the Henry Townhomes.

Alistair Robin, the on-duty battalion chief with the CFD, says several calls from witnesses came in about fire and black smoke coming from the rooftop of a townhouse complex on the corner of Memorial Drive and 29 Street.

“Crews responded and found just exactly that, black smoke and fire, quickly gained access with our aerial trucks and through the building itself and made their way to a rooftop patio, where it looks like fire was coming from around a barbecue area,” he said.

Firefighters worked through the side of the building just to check for any extensions of the blaze, making sure it didn’t go into any other units.

No other units were affected, no injuries have been reported, and nobody aside from the source unit will be displaced.

“Thankfully, it was a part of the structure that was not inhabited, and nobody up there, so it was good,” Robin said.

He also says crews took care with their water use amid the city’s water restrictions.

“We’re always conscious about how much water we’re using and if there are any implications to hydrants, and I can report that very little water was actually needed, and no issues with the hydrants functioning as they should,” Robin said.

Fire investigators are on scene determining the cause and origin of the fire.

Parkdale Boulevard and 29 Street closed in both directions but reopened just after 11:30 a.m.
