The City of Calgary’s dementia-inclusive golf program is helping people reconnect with the sport.

FORE! The Love of Golf is a pilot program that pairs players with their care partners, to help them navigate the course and offer a few pointers too.

“For me it’s a godsend — that’s been the big deal. Lying in bed and watching T.V just didn’t work for me, so I just started to get out and do it, and my wife was the one that really coaxed me,” said participant Dave Drader.

Drader and his wife spent countless hours playing golf together before he was diagnosed with dementia. He says being on the course again allows him to relax and have fun — exactly what this pilot program aims to do.

“It gives people an opportunity to just be outdoors, go for walk and enjoy people’s company. It’s not about keeping score but just playing and enjoying others’ company,” said Gennie Liu, City of Calgary Recreation Program Specialist.

Marjorie Aucoin’s husband Leo was diagnosed with dementia five years ago. As one of the care partners, she says the program is a great way to meet others who are facing similar challenges.

“We get to meet all the other care partners who have been just fantastic. It’s a good connection for us because otherwise we’d lose our minds,” Aucoin said.

After seeing an outpouring of positive feedback from participants and their families, the city has decided to extend the program.

“As a result, we’ve created a new program during the fall and winter for them to continue in an indoor setting during the offseason, at a local indoor golf simulation location,” Liu said.

Those interested in signing up for the fall and winter season can do so by calling the city at 403-268-3800.
