Man in 60s critically injured in early morning rollover crash on Deerfoot Trail

Police believe speed may have been a factor in a rollover crash that shut down Deerfoot Trail on Thursday morning and left a man fighting for his life in hospital.

Police believe speed may have been a factor in a rollover crash that shut down Deerfoot Trail on Thursday morning and left a man fighting for his life in hospital.

Calgary police say just after 3:30 a.m., officers were called for reports of a single-vehicle incident in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail SE at the Peigan Trail SE interchange.

Investigators say a white 2015 GMC Savana van, driven by a man in his 60s, was travelling south on Deerfoot when it hit the concrete median just south of the Peigan Trail off-ramp.

The van then crossed three southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail before going off the road and hitting the bridge deck of the Peigan Trail overpass. Police say the van then rolled onto its roof and came to a stop in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail.

The driver was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Alcohol and drugs aren’t believed to be factors in the crash. However, speed is being considered as a factor.

The road was closed for several hours but reopened at 8 a.m.

Anyone who may have seen the collision or who has dashcam footage is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
