One rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition in Deerfoot crash

The collision happened on Northbound Deerfoot Trail Near 17th Avenue SE just after 6 pm Saturday evening.

One person was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries sustained from a two-vehicle crash on Deerfoot in the city’s southeast Saturday evening.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux tells CityNews they responded to reports of the incident on northbound Deefoot Trail near 17 Avenue just after 6 p.m.

Paramedics at the scene say there were two people, the drivers of their respective vehicles.

Calgary police said Sunday a 20-year-old male lost control of his Acura as he made a sudden lane change and side-swiped a Kia, causing the latter to crash into a ditch.

The Kia rolled down an embankment and struck a chainlink fence, landing on its roof. The driver, a man in his 50s, suffered minor injuries.

The Acura then ended up crashing into the concrete portion of an overhead sign.

Brideaux explained the man needed “extensive extrication” from his vehicle by the Calgary Fire Department.

The 20-year-old was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in serious and “potentially life-threatening condition.”

EMS says the other driver declined transport after being assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Police say excessive speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
