Popular gas station, truck stop west of Calgary to relocate

Fueling up for a trip to the mountains could soon look different for some with a popular gas station west of Calgary set to relocate.

The Petro-Canada location along the Trans-Canada at the Highway 22 interchange has proved to be a popular and convenient spot to fuel up, but the spot is set to undergo a major transformation.

The province is going to make improvement to the interchange that will take over some of the land where the rest stop currently sits. It leaves Petro-Canada’s parent company Suncor in need of a different location.

The company was hoping a patch of land along Township Road 250 near the Springbank Airport, about 10 minutes east of the current location, would be the future spot. That application was refused by Rocky View County who say it’s a great project, but call the proposed site the wrong place.

The county may be echoing the frustration of Springbank residents who are worried about the prospect of a bustling truck stop moving onto a quiet residential road.

Ian Galbraith has lived in the area for 26 years and says the proposed site is not conducive to house a turnstile of transport trucks.

“You’ve got dozens of school bus runs that happen on that same road every day,” he says. “We’ve also got emergency services at the airport that have to go through that intersection.”

“Many, many hundreds of acreages here are directly impacted by this proposal.”

Galbraith also believes having a truck stop share a parking lot with the neighbouring Edge School poses a major safety concern.
