A Calgary man is shaken up after he was awakened by an intruder inside his downtown condo in the middle of the night.
The break-in occurred around 1 a.m. Wednesday at a condo building along 13 Avenue SW near Central Memorial Park.
Cameron Welter was asleep in bed when he was woken up by rumbling sounds coming from his second-floor patio. He says he quickly shot out of bed, opened his bedroom door, and saw a man dressed in all black inside his living room.
“I screamed at him, don’t really remember what I said,” Welter tells CityNews. “I think it kind of jolted him, and jolted me too.”
“I ran out the front door, and yeah it seemed to scare him off and I immediately called police,” he says, adding that members of Calgary Police Service and a K-9 unit responded.
Welter says he had left his patio door unlocked when he went to sleep.
“My last thought would be that someone could get access to my unit on the second floor through my patio,” he says. “It was hard to get to sleep after.”
Many residents who live in the building say they’ve always felt safe, but others say they’re feeling concerned following the bizarre incident.
“It’s so sad to see, like what makes people do that, right?” asks resident Sarah Barthel. “But I also feel for the neighbour, that is so so scary.”
Welter says it’s a tough way to learn a lesson, but he vows to be more careful moving forward.
“Yeah, I’m going to get a security camera up there and make sure the doors are locked,” he says. “But I don’t anticipate this happening again.”
