Look up! Northern Lights should keep dazzling Calgary skies this weekend

It’s been quite a week for aurora watchers across Canada with dazzling overnight displays of the northern lights that have even been visible over parts of the U.S. and Europe.

The light show over Calgary and surrounding areas began Tuesday thanks to a geomagnetic storm Monday night.

Another strong solar storm had northern skies dancing with pink, purple, green, and blue lights on Thursday night, ranging from the west coast of Canada all the way to Germany.

660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says there is another good chance on Friday night for sky gazers to get a show. He says cloud cover over Calgary is expected to be minimal.

“Active aurora is also possible as we carry through Saturday evening, although that chance is reduced,” says Stanfield, adding that Sunday the skies should be quieter on Sunday.

When a solar storm passes by earth, it can spark a disturbance in the magnetic field ,which typically results in bright displays of the northern lights across Canada and the northern U.S.

The Thanksgiving long weekend forecast calls for mostly clear skies and above seasonal daytime highs climbing into the high-teens on Sunday, and then into the 20s on Monday.
