Updated Calgary bylaw includes new fines for improper snow shovelling

Calgarians will need to ensure they are removing snow the right way this winter with the city introducing new fines for dumping snow into public spaces.

City council recently approved a new Winter Maintenance Policy that the city says includes updated bylaws introducing new fines for shovelling snow from a private property onto a public area.

It means penalties for snow shoveled from a driveway, or private walkway, into a road, bike lane or pedestrian pathway.

“We encourage Calgarians to use areas like lawns for snow storage over the cooler months, as it will have the added benefit of providing much needed moisture in the spring during the thaw,” reads a release from the city.

The city is also reminding residents that snow removal from sidewalks is the responsibility of the “adjacent property owner,” and say sidewalks should be cleared of snow within 24 hours after a snowfall ends.

The city says crews will be on standby 24 hours a day and ready to respond to snowfall throughout the winter. Crews will prioritize bus routes and major routes first, before moving on to minor roadways.

“Snow can happen anytime,” says Chris Hewitt, the city’s manager of mobility maintenace. “The crews are ready to respond, and our priority snow response aims to minimize disruptions caused by weather conditions while maintaining high standards of public safety and convenience.”
