RCMP now say the drowning death of a five-year-old girl near Edmonton over the long weekend is a criminal investigation.
Mounties from Parkland County responded to a report of two people in the water after a boat capsized on Wabamun Lake — roughly 50km west of Edmonton — around 2:50 p.m. on Sunday.
Police say bystanders pulled a 5-year-old girl from the water before emergency crews arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS and STARS.
A 35-year-old woman was also pulled from the water from another boat.
In an update Thursday, RCMP say through their investigation they’ve learned that the boat did not capsize and they are treating the death as a criminal investigation.
Anyone who may have any information, or who may have been near Wabumun Lake between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 13, is asked to contact investigators at 825-220-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
