Ceremonies, parades, and more: How to mark Remembrance Day in Calgary

Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, is on Monday, and there are plenty of ways Calgarians can mark the occasion and honour those who served.

Here’s everything you need to know about Remembrance Day in Calgary.

Ceremonies

There are several events marking the day across the city.

Getting around

Calgary Transit 

This Remembrance Day, Calgary Transit will be operating buses, CTrains, and On Demand on a Saturday level of service. All veterans and accompanying family members will be able to ride transit for free on Remembrance Day. Veterans wearing uniforms or bearing Veteran identification cards are eligible. 

The Red Line will be closed between Lions Park Station and downtown starting Saturday, Nov. 9 until the very early hours of Tuesday, Nov. 12. Shuttle buses will replace northbound train service to all stations from 7 Street Station to Lions Park Station; and southbound to all stations from Lions Park Station to 8 Street Station. 

A separate special shuttle will run between Lions Park Station and Jubilee Auditorium for the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Shuttles will run every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 only, the city says.

Road closures, detours and traffic

There will be several short-term road closures to accommodate Remembrance Day ceremonies on Monday, Nov. 11.

Field of Crosses (Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.)

  • Eastbound & westbound Riverfront Avenue S.E. access to the Centre Street Bridge will be closed from 9 a.m.-noon
  • Eastbound Memorial Drive N.W. to northbound Centre Street will be closed from 9 a.m.–noon
  • The right-hand lane on westbound Memorial Drive N.W. will be closed between the Centre Street underpass and 3 Street N.W. between 6 a.m.–1 p.m.
  • Please watch for increased pedestrian volume in the area.

Calgary Highlanders Remembrance Day parade (Central Memorial Park) (Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.)

  • 13 Avenue S.W. will be closed between 2 & 5 Street S.W.
  • 12 Avenue S.W. will be closed between 2 & 4 Street S.W.
  • 4 Street S.W. will be closed between 12 & 13 Avenue S.W.

26 Avenue S.E. (8 p.m. November 8 to 1 p.m. November 11)

  • 26 Avenue S.E. closed between 11 Street S.E. and Dartmouth Road.
  • 11 Street S.E. closed between 23 & 26 Avenue S.E.

Parking

Veterans with veteran plates will get free parking in all Calgary Parking surface lots and parkades on Monday.

Everyone can enjoy free parking in on-street ParkPlus zones on Monday, Nov. 11 and weekend rates at all Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots. Regular rates will be in effect at partner lots such as TELUS Spark, Calgary Stampede, Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.

The Calgary Parking Contact Centre and Impound Lot will be closed on Monday, Nov.11.

Landfill hours

There will be regular hours of operation for Monday, Nov. 11. Landfill hours and locations are available on calgary.ca/landfill.

Remembrance Day public swimming, skating and closures

Free swimming

The city is offering free public swimming on Nov. 11, from 1–2:30 p.m. and 3–4:30 p.m. at these locations:

  • Acadia Aquatic & Fitness Centre 9009 Fairmount Dr. S.E.
  • Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre 4812 14 Ave. S.E.
  • Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre 6715 Centre St. N.W.

Due to the popularity of free swims, Calgarians are asked to only attend one time slot. Pools may be cleared at 2:30 p.m. to make room for new customers.

Weight rooms will also be open during these times.

Free skating

There will be free public skating on Nov. 11, from 1–2:15 p.m. at:

  • Murray Copot Arena 6727 Centre St. N.W.
  • Optimist/Blunden Arenas 5020 26 Ave. S.W.
  • Kohn/Condon Arenas 502 Heritage Dr. S.W.

Admission is free. But, equipment rentals are not available.

Paid swimming and skating at Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres

  • Public skating will be offered on Nov. 11 from 1–2:15 p.m.
  • Public swimming will be offered on Nov. 11 from 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

A moment of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. to honour those who have served and died in the line of duty.

Closures

All indoor pools, fitness centres and arenas (except for those mentioned above),  arts centres, and the Calgary Soccer Centre will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024.

Swimming lessons will be running as scheduled on Nov. 9 and 10, but not Nov. 11.
