Man in 50s killed in truck pileup on Hwy. 1 east of Calgary

A man is dead after a pileup on Highway 1 east of Calgary on Monday.

Emergency crews were called to the westbound lanes of Highway 1, between Highway 842 and Highway 56, just east of Cluny before 10:30 a.m. for a multi-vehicle collision.

Mounties said they were getting reports of more than 12 vehicles involved and later confirmed the crash was between a pick-up truck and several commercial semi-trucks.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 51-year-old man from Redcliff, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Heavy snowfall made for tricky driving conditions across most of southern Alberta on Monday morning. RCMP say poor road conditions were a likely factor in the crash.

The westbound lanes of Highway 1 were closed in the area for more than six hours. The highway reopened shortly before 6 p.m.

Calgary police confirmed there were more than 150 crashes in the city between midnight and noon on Monday. The city and surrounding areas were under a snowfall warning that was eventually lifted in the afternoon.
