Southbound QEII reopens north of Calgary after semi-truck rollover, chain-reaction crash

A stretch of the QEII Highway north of Calgary has was closed for several hours after a chain-reaction crash Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the southbound lanes of the highway just south of Bowden around 7:30 a.m. for reports of a semi-truck rollover.

RCMP Corp. Troy Savinoff tells CityNews a semi-truck lost control and flipped onto its side on the highway, blocking all the southbound lanes.

He says a good Samaritan stopped to help the driver out when the semi was struck by a Ford F350 that was hauling a cattle trailer.

The driver of the semi, the Good Samaritan and two occupants from the Ford F350 were all taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Savinkoff says there were three animals in the cattle trailer and one died in the crash.

Investigators remained on scene for most of the day while crews worked to tow away the two trucks involved in the crash.

Southbound Highway 2 was closed at Highway 587 in Bowden for more than eight hours. The lanes reopened before 4 p.m.
