Story of The Sundance Kid, Christmas Carol to take over Longview saloon

A new twist on a classic story with a pinch of history is set to take over a historic hotel in the Foothills south of Calgary.

Katie Fournell is a member and performer in the Erratic Players Society, a newer theatre company based in the Foothills south of Calgary.

Last year, the group of artists was approached by the owner of the Twin Cities Saloon and asked if they could throw together a murder mystery play to go with a ticketed meal. It went so well the group has come back this year with a completely new script- based on stories they learned from locals with a little bit of artistic license.

“A Sundance Carol” is based on the true history that renowned outlaw The Sundance Kid once lived and worked near Longview at the Bar U Ranch, and was a best man at a wedding in the area.

Fournell said the theatre troupe played with that idea, combining it with elements from the holiday classic “A Christmas Carol.”

While the Twin Cities Saloon has a storied history, Fournell says the Players are the first people to turn it into a theatre. It isn’t a big space, but that is what makes it special.

“It’s not like aggressive audience participation but you will have a time when the actor is standing right beside you,” she said, saying the whole bar is the stage. “One of the cool things that happens out in Longview is people just tell you the history of Alberta.”

Included with your ticket is a three-course meal with dessert served during intermission. It runs through Nov. 28 to Dec. 31.
