Man attacked with shovel, ice pick in SE Calgary; suspects sought

Edward Djan speaks to a witness to the incident. The witness told CityNews two men were beating up another individual with a shovel and ice pick at the side of his home on 37 Street Southeast.

Police are looking for suspects after an attack outside a home in southeast Calgary on Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to 37 Street SE just north of 17 Avenue around 4:30 a.m. for reports of an assault in a back alley.

A witness tells CityNews they called 911 after seeing a man get attacked behind a home by two people armed with a shovel and an ice pick.

The suspects left the area before officers arrived and the witness says they brought the man inside their home to wait for help to arrive.

“I had to get him out of the cold, I couldn’t pick him up,” says the witness who asked not be named. “He couldn’t stand. He was disoriented.”

“He literally crawled on his hands and knees and dropped on his face.”

Paramedics say the victim had “several traumatic injuries” and was rushed to Foothills hospital in serious condition.

Traces of blood could be seen in the snow where the alleged attack occurred.

Police are still investigating what led to the attack and could not say if it was targeted.
