The Calgary Police Service collision reconstruction team was on scene downtown for several hours Tuesday morning after a woman was hit by a garbage truck.

Investigators tell CityNews officers were called to 8 Avenue and 5 Street SW just before 6:30 a.m.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, according to police.

Investigators believe the woman was crossing 8 Avenue SW in the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection. At the same time, a garbage truck was turning east from the southbound lane and hit the pedestrian.

The driver stayed at the scene and wasn’t hurt.

Police closed 5 Street SW southbound from 6 Avenue SW to 9 Avenue SW and 8 Avenue SW from 6 Street SW to 4 Street SW to investigate.

    The road re-opened just before 12:30 p.m.

Investigators say impairment and excessive speed aren’t considered factors in the crash.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
