A blaze on the upper floors of an apartment complex in downtown Calgary has sent one to hospital Tuesday.

A blaze on the upper floors of an apartment complex in downtown Calgary has sent one to hospital Tuesday.

CFD Battalion Chief Bruce Barrs tells 660 NewsRadio firefighters arrived at the building just before 9:30 a.m. on 12 Avenue and 6 Street SW.

After heading up to the source of the fire on the 17th floor, they found a woman in her mid-30s suffering from smoke inhalation in one of the suites.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux says paramedics arrived at 9:30 a.m. and then rushed the victim to Foothills Medical Centre in critical and life-threatening condition.

He adds no other injuries were reported.

The entire 17th floor was evacuated temporarily, but after the fire was brought under control, residents were able to head back to their homes.

However, Barrs says the suite affected is largely uninhabitable.
