Trudeau to make announcement amid speculation he will step down as Liberal Party leader

By Lucas Casaletto, The Canadian Press

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to make an announcement in Ottawa on Monday morning as speculation over his resignation runs rampant.

On Sunday, the Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as Liberal party leader this week.

The prime minister is slated to speak at 10:45 a.m. at Rideau Hall. That press conference will be streamed live at CityNews 24/7.

Trudeau has faced mounting calls for his resignation from MPs in his caucus. Public opinion polls have continued to show the governing Liberals trailing far behind the Conservatives.

The Globe report says three sources, who weren’t authorized to speak about the matter publicly, did not know a specific timeline, but they expected Trudeau to announce his plans before a national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

The Canadian Press and CityNews have not independently confirmed the Globe report.

It’s unclear if Trudeau will stay on as prime minister or if an interim leader will be selected through a Liberal leadership race if he decides to step down.
