Calgary’s Office of the City Clerk has confirmed former mayor Rod Sykes has died.

Sykes was the 30th mayor of Calgary from 1969 to 1977.

Before politics, he organized a Canada Pacific Real Estate Subsidiary to be headquartered in Calgary in the early 60s.

Later, he worked to plan and construct what was then known as the Husky Tower — now called the Calgary Tower. At the time, it was the tallest structure on Calgary’s skyline.

The following year, Sykes ran for mayor, winning the largest majority in the city’s history.

He served three terms, later spending two years as head of Alberta’s official opposition as leader of the Social Credit Party, before running an unsuccessful bid at federal office.

    Sykes was 95.
