Skier dies after falling into sink hole in Fernie: RCMP

A skier has died after falling into a sink hole in Fernie, B.C. this week.

Emergency crews were called to Fernie Alpine Resort on Wednesday after getting reports of a man buried in the snow near the top of the ski hill.

Ski patrol and B.C. Ambulance made efforts to keep the 67-year-old man alive and he was rushed to hospital, according to Elk Valley RCMP.

“Unfortunately, after several hours attempting to improve his health status, the man was taken off life support and declared deceased,” reads a police release.

Investigators believe poor visibility lead to the man falling into a naturally occurring sink hole filled with loose snow that was around 20 by 30 feet wide

Elk Valley RCMP are assisting the BC Coroner Service in the ongoing investigation.
