Teen girl dead after getting pinned under vehicle in NE Calgary

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article stated firefighters were unable to free the teen from underneath the vehicle. Firefighters were able to free the teen and she was assessed by paramedics

A 17-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a vehicle in a northeast Calgary intersection Wednesday afternoon.

Police say officers responded to 26 Avenue NE and Rundlehorn Drive around 1:45 p.m. for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Investigators say a 75-year-old woman was driving a grey 2019 Ford Ecosport south on Rundlehorn Drive NE at the same time a teenage girl was crossing the road in a marked crosswalk.

Police say the driver didn’t stop at the stop sign and hit the girl, pinning her under the vehicle.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) helped in freeing the girl, but in the end she suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver wasn’t hurt and stayed at the scene.

Speed and alcohol are not being considered factors in the collision; police are investigating the failure to obey the stop sign as a possible cause.

The intersection was closed in all directions for several hours but reopened around 4:40 p.m.

Anyone with information who may have seen the collision is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
