The family of a 17-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a driver at a northeast Calgary intersection returned to the crash scene a day after the teen’s life was abruptly cut short.

Calgary police say 17-year-old Amy Tran was walking at a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Rundlehorn Drive NE and 26 Avenue on Wednesday afternoon when she was struck and pinned under an SUV.

Tran was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her older sister says she is still in disbelief.

“She knew me the most out of everybody in my life and I knew her the most as well,” says Amy’s sister, speaking to CityNews on Thursday steps from where the collision occurred. “We were very close. We had very similar interests, our way of thinking was similar.”

She says Amy was walking home after completing an exam at Lester B Pearson Senior High School.

“I was on my way home yesterday from my classes and also saw that (the intersection) was blocked off. I just couldn’t know it could happen to me.”

Amy’s father, now grieving after learning he lost one of his two daughters, says he was still at work when the police showed up at their family home to let them know what happened.

“My daughter just called me and asked me to give my work address, then three of them came over there and told me to come out of the company,” says Duc Tran.

“I drove her to the school and she never came back home.”

As the family searches for more answers about Amy’s death, they are also remembering who she was. The teen was wrapping up her final year in high school and had been accepted into the University of Calgary’s engineering program.

“She had big dreams, because she wanted do something out of it, not just for the money,” says Amy’s sister.

Police say the driver who struck Amy remained at the scene. Investigators do not believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, but they are looking into whether the driver failed to obey a stop sign.
