Double murder suspect wanted on Canada-wide warrants arrested during Airdrie traffic stop

A routine traffic stop in Airdrie led to the arrest of a fugitive wanted for two counts of first-degree murder.

A double murder suspect wanted on Canada-wide warrants was arrested during a traffic stop in the Calgary-area earlier this week.

The RCMP say officers were on speed patrol along Edmonton Trail NE in Airdrie on Monday when they stopped a vehicle for speeding and having an illegal window tint.

Police say further investigation from officers suggested the female driver and male passenger were in possession of “proceeds of crime” and were about to arrest both of them.

During the arrest, it is alleged the male passenger got out of the vehicle and started to run away. Officers caught up to the suspect on foot and allegedly found a loaded 40 caliber gun on him as they were arresting him.

It is further alleged the suspect gave police false identification, but investigators were able to find out his actual identity.

RCMP say the male suspect was wanted on Canada-wide warrants stemming from a 2018 homicide investigation in Toronto. He was wanted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

The suspect is now facing more than a dozen additional charges including five firearm offences, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of resisting arrest. Police are not identifying the accused since he was a minor at the time of the Toronto crimes.

The driver, 25-year-old B.C. resident Alysha Chand, is facing two charges including possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in an Airdrie courtroom on Thursday.
