Two day spaces to open in Calgary for those facing homelessness

Calgarians struggling with homelessness will have more places to spend their days — stay warm, rest, and access services — under a new city initiative.

The Calgary Homeless Foundation, together with the City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, and United Way of Calgary & Area, will launch two year-round day spaces in the city.

Day spaces are designed to address the complex challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness, establishing people-centred, daytime resource spaces where individuals can access resources like warm meals, and make social connections.

Individuals will also have the opportunity make housing or shelter connections.

These locations will offer alternatives to public spaces like libraries, parks, and transit during daytime hours.

The city will fund the spaces, one of which will be in the downtown core, while the other will be outside the core. It says the operator of the sites and the specific locations will be announced in March.

This initiative builds on the Extreme Weather Response (EWR) network programming, which runs from December to March.

According to the city, more than 4,200 visits have been made to warming spaces since Nov. 1, 2024. From Dec. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024, the shelter shuttle service facilitated 449 transports for warming spaces, serving 308 unique individuals.
