Experts will attempt to clone 300-year-old Cochrane tree lost in wind storm

A 300-year-old tree toppled by a torrential wind storm near Cochrane earlier this month will live on in its potential clones.

The Grandfather Tree, located in a wooded area just off a walking trail near the Cochrane RancheHouse, fell over thanks to massive gusts on Jan. 17.

The Town of Cochrane now says propagation specialists have successfully collected seeds and meristem cuttings from the top of the tree.

They are working with a grower to propagate the seeds and are also exploring “innovative tissue culture micropropagation techniques” to create potential clones of the tree.

“These efforts aim to preserve the Grandfather Tree’s unique genetic legacy for future generations,” the town said.

Mayor Jeff Genung is also encourage residents to share their thoughts and suggestions on how to further commemorate the historic landmark.

Once all ideas have been gathered, they will be presented to town council for consideration.

Residents who have not yet submitted suggestions for commemorating the tree are encouraged to email community.services@cochrane.ca by Friday, Jan. 31.

Starting Thursday, Cochrane’s Park and Open Spaces Department will start safety work on the tree, the town says. This will include the removal of a portion of the upper tree to mitigate fire risks.

Branches along the trunk will also be pruned to stabilize the tree and allow it to sit more securely on the slope,

All wood removed from the site will be preserved for use in a future commemorative project, the town says.

To ensure public safety, the Grandfather Tree trail will be temporarily closed to all bicycle and pedestrian traffic during this time.

Residents and visitors to the area are asked to respect posted signage and follow any guidance provided by staff working in the area.
