Two Calgary boys are facing several charges in what police allege was a scheme that saw the theft of multiple iPhones.

Investigators say last month, a woman posted an ad online to sell her cellphone. On Jan. 24 around 2 p.m., she arranged to meet an unknown person, who claimed they were interested in buying the iPhone, on Braniff Road SW.

When the woman got to the meeting spot, she got out of her vehicle and was met by two young boys who police say stole the iPhone and bear sprayed her before running away.

Two more incidents were reported to police in the following days, on Jan. 25 and 26. Once again, the victims showed up to Braniff Road SW to sell a phone, were met by two young boys, bear sprayed, and had their phones stolen.

A search warrant was executed by officers at a home in Braeside on Feb. 6.

Police located five cellphones, three cans of bear spray, clothing believed to be used during the robberies, a pellet gun, and more than $22,000 worth of new clothing believed to be stolen.

A 12-year-old boy has been charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon, and two counts of failure to comply.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with three counts of robbery and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon.

The pair can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They’re set to appear in court later this month.
