Doug’s Winter Party, an idea originating in the US spawns a Calgary meet-up in Bowness. Phoenix Phillips reports.

One viral moment is all it took to foster the idea of bringing Calgarians together for a meet-up affectionately known as ‘Doug’s Winter Party.’

The idea started with a viral post on TikTok that shows an 85-year-old man from Pennsylvania named Doug on a doorbell camera handing out invitations to his party. The invitation reads “a celebration of winter, 4 p.m. until the cops arrive.”

Calgarian Joanne Peters jumped on the idea of having a local version of Doug’s “celebration of winter.”

“It is about bringing people together and just sitting back and having a really good time,” she says. “Not worrying about inflation and the crazy Trumps of the world.”

“We have to band together as a group and just let everything else slide.”

When Peters approached Royal Canadian Legion 238 president Tyson Struk with the idea of the party, all he could say was “let’s do this.”

“It’s about community, getting together and embracing the people around you,” he says. “Having everybody get together to forget all of our troubles and have a good time and relax and celebrate life as it is in Bowness.”

Other versons of ‘Doug’s Winter Party’ are being planned from Chilliwack, B.C. to Estevan, Saskatchewan.

As for what guests should bring, according to the originator’s original invitation — all you need is a smile.

“Ya, and have fun,” says Struk.

‘Doug’s Winter Party’ at legion in Bowness is Feb. 15 from 4 p.m. until the cops come.
