Relief from Calgary cold could be on the way with positive temperatures in forecast

Calgarians have suffered through bitter cold for most of February, but there could be some good news on the weather front as the month comes to an end.

“Normally, we get into these upward and downward trends, sometimes it’ll be for a week down, then a week up, then another week down again,” explained 660 NewsRadio meteorologist, Kevin Stanfield. “We’re going on three weeks in the downward spiral.”

Tuesday will still feel very winter-like — with a 60 per cent chance of snow in the morning alongside a high of -18 C, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). This comes with a forecasted wind chill of -34 C in the morning and -27 C in the afternoon.

ECCC says Wednesday will likely still be cold with a high of -13 C. The morning will be bitter, with a forecast of -31 C with the wind chill. Wednesday afternoon will be -20 with the wind chill.

Thursday is when the shift really starts to flip — the ECCC forecast predicts a high of 5 C and a low of -2 C.

“Peeking at that long range forecast, I’m seeing some evidence of some westerly wind and if that’s able to develop and push some really warm air off the Rockies, we’re in for some extraordinarily warm temperatures by the weekend,” Stanfield said.

It’s just supposed to get better from there: a high of 7 C and a low of -1 C on Friday, a high of 9 C and a low of 6 C on Saturday.

Sunday will be the day to make outdoor plans, with a forecasted high of 13 C and a low of 3 C.

Monday will be just as balmy, with a high of 11 C.
