A woman is dead and a child is in hospital following a carbon monoxide leak at a southwest Calgary home.

Police and fire officials say crews responded to a home on Shawmeadows Crescent SW early Tuesday afternoon, where they found a woman and a child inside the house.

The woman was unconscious, according to police, and was taken to hospital where she later died. The child was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition.

An investigation by ATCO and fire crews indicate the source of the carbon monoxide was a slow leak from the furnace.

As such, the death is considered non-criminal.

Calgary Fire says there were no carbon monoxide alarms found in the home when firefighters did a search.
