Calgary man charged in fatal, ‘targeted’ 2023 shooting

A man is facing first degree murder charges in the shooting of a man outside a Forest Lawn hookah lounge more than a year ago.

Police have charged 29-year-old Paulos Berhe with one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Investigators allege Berhe targeted the victim, 43-year-old Donald Lyons, as well as a woman in her 30s who was seriously injured in the shooting on Dec. 18, 2023 on 35 Street SE.

On Wednesday, police executed a search warrant at a home on Erin Ridge Road SE. Berhe was arrested without incident.

Investigators say the continued to look for answers in Lyons’ death, even as time continued to pass.

“Due to the level of pre-planning and criminality involved, investigations such as this one are historically difficult to solve,” Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the CPS Homicide Unit said. “Our investigators spent countless hours pouring over the evidence in this case in the pursuit of justice for Donald’s family.”

Berhe’s first court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
