A long-time Calgary city councillor says he won’t be running a campaign for re-election in October.
Ward 14 Coun. Peter Demong confirmed the news Monday.
“After 15 years on City Council, the time for a change has come for me,” he wrote on social media. “With all the emotion that comes with ending a significant chapter of one’s life, I am writing to tell you that this will be my last term serving as your municipal representative.”
Demong says representing Ward 14 and working to improve operations in Calgary has been a privilege.
“I have had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to serve you and I have done my best to honour that opportunity,” he added, “You deserve reassurance that, while I open that opportunity for a fresh set of faces, I will continue to serve you to the best of my ability until my time is officially over.”
Demong was first elected as a councillor in the October 2010 municipal election.
He was a business owner and worked in logistics management before entering politics.
Demong and his wife owned and operated Deer Valley Florist in Deer Ridge from 1996 to 2015.
He joins Ward 12 Coun. Evan Spencer, Ward 3 Coun. Jasmine Mian, and Ward 8 Coun. Courtney Walcott in stepping away from municipal political office.
