Calgary police are warning the public to be vigilant following a series of distraction thefts across the city.
Investigators say the series of thefts were reported to police in early February, and even though they haven’t been confirmed to be connected, investigators say the crime trend is growing.
Distraction thefts can come in various forms, but typically happen while the victim is in a parking lot or waiting in public a public area.
According to police, perpetrators will approach strangers and use elaborate stories to request money in exchange for gold or jewelry, use fake gold or jewelry as collateral to borrow money, steal real jewelry, place fake jewelry on victims as a gift and, while being in close physical proximity, steal real jewelry the victim is wearing.
“We urge members of the public to exercise caution if they are approached by unknown individuals looking to sell gold or jewelry, or to borrow money,” District 5 General Investigative Unit Staff Sergeant Geoff Gawlinski said. “These offenders often tell emotional stories as to why they need money, and they can be very convincing. If this has happened to you, or you are aware of incidents like these, please report them to the police.”
Here are some tips from Calgary police on how to prevent personal theft:
Stay alert: be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets, public transport or tourist attractions.
Secure your belongings: use bags with zippers or anti-theft features, and keep them in front of you rather than on your back. Avoid leaving valuables in back pockets.
Avoid flashiness: refrain from openly displaying expensive items like jewelry, watches or gadgets.
Beware of strangers: be cautious when approached by strangers offering assistance, asking for help or creating a scene—they may be trying to divert your attention.
Split your valuables: don’t carry all your valuables in one place. Keep some cash and cards in separate pockets or pouches.
Distrust suspicious activities: if someone bumps into you, spills something on you or creates a distraction, check your belongings immediately.
Secure technology: when using electronic devices like phones or laptops in public, maintain a firm grip, and avoid placing them on tables within arm’s reach of others.
Keep bags closed: regularly check that your bags and pockets are securely closed, especially after someone bumps into you.
Trust your instincts: if a situation or person feels off, prioritize your safety and move away.
Stay informed: familiarize yourself with local safety tips when travelling, as theft techniques can vary by region.
Calgary police say stolen property can be reported online, at any district office or by calling the non-emergency line.
