The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is about to take visitors on a brand-new adventure into the heart of Africa.

The zoo has unveiled updates to its African Savannah exhibit on Thursday that is home to zebras, giraffes, and ostriches.

The former Savannah Yard has been redesigned with new landscaping and 220 feet of custom fencing, creating two new viewing areas for visitors. The area is now called Savannah Plains.

The Savannah Barn has been replaced by a 4,445-square-foot structure called Savannah Crossing, which will include an interior habitat, exterior courtyard, and a visitor viewing area.

The spaces were originally built in 1993 and then upgraded in 2002. Zoo officials say the latest transformations aims to deepen visitor connections with wildlife.

“Every step of this project reinforces our commitment to exceptional animal care, conservation education, and inspiring people to take action for wildlife,” says Dr. Kyle Burks, President & CEO of the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.

The revamped areas are set to open to the public on Friday.
