Edmonton Centre MP Randy Boissonnault says he will not seek re-election in the next federal election.
In a statement posted to social media on Friday, Boissonnault says he made the decision to not run again after having conversations with family and friends.
“It is no secret that the last year has been an incredibly difficult one for me and my family,” reads the statement. “It is time for me to embark on a new adventure.”
Boissonnault left his post as employment minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet last November after weeks of questions about his past claims of Indigenous identity.
The Edmonton MP had been described as Indigenous multiple times in communications from the Liberal party and in 2018 referred to himself as “non-status adopted Cree.”
He later walked back those claims since reports emerged questioning those claims and both the Conservatives and NDP called on him to resign.
New Prime Minister and Liberal leader Mark Carney is expected to call a snap federal election on Sunday.
