Calgary police have charged a man with attempted murder after an assault left one person in life-threatening condition in the northwest Montgomery area Saturday.
Police said Sunday that several witnesses reported a man “violently attacking” another man, who was unconscious on the street outside a home on the 4500 block of Montgomery Avenue just after 11 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers say they saw a man assaulting another man who looked to be unresponsive. After de-escalating the situation, police arrested the suspect.
“The calls for service we did receive directly resulted in that victim being probably saved. His life was probably saved by them calling us and us making it in such quick time,” Staff Sgt John Guigon told 660 NewsRadio.
EMS confirmed that a man was rushed to Foothills Hospital at around 11:15 a.m., where police say he remains in life-threatening condition. Paramedics later added another person at the scene was taken in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the investigation has led police to believe the two men were fighting indoors before the suspect dragged the unconscious victim outside onto the street and kept up his assault. Amid the fighting, police add the suspect went back inside to “obtain a weapon” before continuing.
Investigators are now charging 31-year-old Nasser Kasigwa with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
It’s unclear if the victim and the suspect are known to each other.
The road was closed for several hours as officers investigated.
Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
