A 37-year-old man is facing impaired-related charges after crashing into a marked police vehicle during a traffic stop on Stoney Trail SE, leaving an officer with minor injuries.

Calgary police are asking the public to keep an eye out during traffic stops after an officer was struck by an alleged drunk driver Friday.

It happened at around 8:45 p.m. when a police officer was conducting a traffic stop on Stoney Trail at 88 Street SE when their vehicle was struck from behind.

Police believe the officer, while sitting in the driver’s seat with flashing emergency lights on the right shoulder of Stoney Trail SE, was struck by a white 2015 Dodge Caravan at an unknown rate of speed.

While the vehicle suffered significant damage, it was pulled apart to allow the officer to escape. He was taken to hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result, the cop cruiser smacked right into the vehicle that was stopped, though the driver suffered no injuries.

Meanwhile, officers say the driver of the Dodge Caravan, 37-year-old Nolan Taylor Watt, suffered no injuries but was arrested on the scene.

He now faces multiple charges for impaired driving, operating a motor vehicle with a blood concentration exceeding 80 milligrams, and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

Officers expect Watt to appear in court on May 6.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with officer-based traffic enforcement for police and all road users on high-speed, high-volume roadways,” said Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
