People gathered at the U.S. consulate in downtown Calgary on Monday to show their support for democracy and human rights. This comes amidst U.S. President Donald Trump’s continued threats to Canada’s sovereignty.
“We will never be the 51st state,” one woman said passionately.
“We are standing in solidarity of our American friends,” she continued. “And if this does come to war, we will win, because we also have 200 million Americans on our side.”
Another protester said that Trump is a fascist.
“We’re not into Trumpism, we’re not into fascism” she said. “And that’s what Trump is; he’s a fascist,”
One man struggled to hold back tears, fearing how the Trump administration’s handling of illegal immigrants could escalate.
“Right now they’re getting rid of all these people from Central America, South America, and they’re all disappearing,” he said. “How long is it before they take other people off the street?”
Though plenty were there showing their displeasure for Trump’s threats and policies, some chants in the crowd were also directed towards Premier Danielle Smith.
One man said that throughout “multiple public health scandals,” Premier Smith has spent more time “buddying up” with those who want to make Canada the 51st state, “as opposed to being here, with the people of this province, through a trying time.”
The protest in Calgary is part of a show of solidarity across several Canadian cities.
