Wintry weather is making a return to Alberta this week with a large swath of the province now under a snowfall warning through Friday.
The warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is in place for western and central parts of Alberta including, Banff, Jasper and Edmonton — with other areas like Red Deer and Grande Prairie under special weather statements.
Heavy wet snow is expected to begin in the impacted areas on Wednesday evening with snowfall intensifying on Thursday morning. Snowfall amounts up to 20 centimetres are expected by Friday morning.
“Warm temperatures ahead of this storm may lead to significant melting at the beginning of the event,” says Environment Canada. “Also, the snow may form in heavy bands, which could lead to high totals over some areas with less nearby.”
Calgary is not under any special weather statement or snowfall warning, but meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says the city can still expect some precipitation.
“There’s an area of instability just around the corner as we clearly exit this ridge of high pressure, not a lot of sunshine to be found over the next few days,” says Stanfield.
He says the city can expect up to 10mm of rain through Friday.
Motorists travelling in areas west and north of the city are being advised to driver according to road conditions over the next two days, and prepare for “quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”
