A person was left with serious, life-threatening injuries after being hit by a vehicle in downtown Calgary Tuesday night, police say.

Investigators were called to the area of 1 Street and 4 Avenue SE around 9 p.m. for reports a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Calgary police say the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene.

Westbound 4 Avenue was closed between Macleod Trail SE and 1 Street SE for several hours during the police investigation.

Area roads have since reopened to traffic.
