A Calgary mother is sounding the alarm after witnessing a speeding driver nearly strike her 11-year-old daughter.
The incident was caught on camera around 1:20 p.m. on Sunday — a vehicle can be seen speeding in a playground zone on her street at Bridlewood Avenue SW.
Sarah Young-Fleming, the mother who saw the incident, heard the white Honda Civic “tearing down the street,” speeding by just as her daughter was going to cross the street.
Quinn Fleming, the daughter, said she was about to cross when she heard her mother yell across the street, telling the driver to slow down.
“You need to slow the heck down; this is not okay,” Young-Fleming said.
Quinn was walking a dog at the time, and thought about what could’ve happened if the dog pulled forward, bringing her along with him.
“I’ve never had something like that [happen], but it was definitely scary,” she said.
The family is left shaken by the incident. Young-Fleming said she wants to see stricter enforcement and added safety measures like speed bumps throughout the area, fearing the next time a driver speeds down her street, it may be more than a close call.
“I want this to stop before somebody gets killed, and somebody is going to either get killed, or get extremely injured,” Young-Fleming said.
Calgary police are aware of the incident, responding to reports of a vehicle driving at excessive speed through a playground zone on Sunday.
“The investigation remains ongoing as we seek to identify the vehicle and driver involved in the incident,” police said in a statement.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or the driver is asked to contact police or CrimeStoppers.
