Calgary police lay charges against teen in alleged drunk driving crash that killed passenger

A Calgary man is facing charges in connection to a car crash that killed his teen passenger last year.

Police say around 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2024, officers responded to a serious collision in the eastbound lanes of Glenmore Trail SW, west of the Crowchild Trail SW junction.

It’s believed a 2018 BMW M240i, driven by a 19-year-old with an 18-year-old and 21-year-old as passengers, was traveling east on Glenmore Trail SW.

The driver wasn’t able to navigate a bend in the road, entered the right shoulder of the road, and hit a stationary crane that was being operated by a man in his 30s, according to police.

The 19-year-old driver was seriously injured, while the 21-year-old had minor injuries and the crane operator wasn’t hurt.

However, the 18-year-old was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Kane Anignostis Burrows, has since been charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing injury, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing injuries, and driving while prohibited.

Burrows is set to appear in court next month.
