Dozens of crashes as spring snowstorm causes traffic chaos in Edmonton

    After Edmonton received a healthy snow fall over the past two days. The city's collision reporting centre saying nearly 200 collisions happened on snowy city streets.

    After 24 hours of snowfall, Edmontonians woke up to icy roads and slick conditions with police saying they responded to more than 180 crashes in a 12 hour period.

    Cars travelling on Whitemud Drive, a key artery in Edmonton, were bumper-to-bumper in both directions Thursday night after several collisions brought traffic to a standstill. Police said the road was clear just before 8:30 a.m. Friday — nearly 12 hours after the first advisory was issued.

    Between 8 am-8pm on Thursday, 184 collisions were reported and 36 vehicles were towed.

    The Alberta RCMP in a press release Friday morning reminded people to drive with caution, stating they responded to 147 motor vehicle collisions.

    Several people took to social media to recount their experiences from being stranded on several city roads.

    A snowfall warning remains in effect for Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park, with up to 30 centimetres possible before snow is expected taper off Friday night.
