A man has life-altering injuries after being hit by a vehicle overnight in downtown Calgary.

Calgary police say it happened just before 1 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Macleod Trail and 14 Avenue SE.

Investigators say a 1999 Honda Civic was travelling north on Macleod approaching 14 Avenue SE when the it struck a man in his 50s who was crossing the roadway.

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition and police say he has life-altering injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old man, was not hurt. He stayed at the scene and is co-operating with investigators.

Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash, but speed is being investigated as a potential factor.

Area roads were closed for several hours but reopened to traffic just after 4:30 a.m.
