A member of Calgary’s city council has announced she’s running for mayor.

Ward 1 Coun. Sonya Sharp made the announcement at a Monday night event in downtown Calgary. Sharp was first elected to council in 2021 and is running under the Communities First party banner.

She says she plans to stop wasteful spending, focus on core services like roads and efficient infrastructure, and prioritize public safety.

Sharp is the only current councillor who has announced she is running, joining at least four others in the mayoral race, including current mayor Jyoti Gondek, former city councillors and failed 2021 candidates Jeromy Farkas and Jeff Davison, and former police commission chair Brian Thiessen.

None of the candidates have officially filed nomination papers yet.

Election day in Calgary is Oct. 20, 2025.
