57-year-old woman killed in hit-and-run involving semi truck on Stoney Trail

By CityNews Staff

A 57-year-old woman is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Stoney Trail NW just before midnight on Tuesday, Calgary police say.

Investigators say the collision happened in the southbound lanes of Stoney Trail NW on the approach to the bridge deck of Nose Hill Drive NW.

At the time, a white 2019 Toyota Corolla, driven by a woman in her 50s, was driving south on Stoney Trail in one of the lanes closer to the median.

Police believe the Corolla was hit by an unknown vehicle, believed to be a semi-truck and trailer combination.

The unknown vehicle didn’t stay at the scene.

A short time later, a roadway maintenance truck with two people in it came upon the scene and gave medical aid to the woman.

According to police, moments later, a black 2018 Ram truck, driven by a 21-year-old man with a 21-year-old passenger, hit a post and cable barrier in the median, striking the woman. The Ram then hit the back of the road maintenance truck.

Investigators say the woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The other drivers and passengers weren’t hurt in the collision.

At this time, there is no evidence of speed, alcohol, drugs as factors in the collision.

Police say a man in his 20s has been arrested, but they are still looking for the semi he was driving.

Investigators say the truck will be missing it’s landing gear.

Police closed southbound Stoney Trail at Crowchild Trail and Scenic Acres Drive through to Nose Hill Drive for nearly 10 hours.
